- Why do you consider yourself to be a Green Living Enthusiast, Diva,Guru and/or Health & Wellness Expert/Inspiration? Well let me start off by saying it has been a long 16 years of many health experiences that brought me to a very challenging place initially of needing to really figure out what my body needs on a daily basis, so it has taken years of trying many diets and many things to change my life. I have come to a great place of many holistic maladies that truly do work and even I in my enthusiastic approach I was surprised at how natural remedies that are good for our environment can assist the body in achieving total wellness. Even though it is a daily process for me and tremendous work, there is no other way to encourage a healthier environment than to take any measure we can to keep ourselves healthier throughout body mind and spirit. I am in a huge process and feel I have achieved that and it takes a serious daily regimen to do so, but it works for me and it all started back with the Perricone diet and even before then with the macrobiotic living.
- What are your 5 top “Green” rules to live by? Do not smoke, I do not drink at all, I recycle, I use my trader joes and whole foods bags when I can to save trees and I share a vehicle.
- What is your definition of “wellness”? Homeostasis. The body in balance and the mind at ease and the spirit flourishing with positive nourishment of healing and love on a daily basis. I aspire for that daily, due to our challenging eco systems we live in, our bodies can be balanced one minute and out of balance the next, due to toxins, auto emissions, and negative energies. So I use alot of positive affirmations and flower essences in my healing to emit positive thought patterns and energy to heal myself and those around me. It actually works and it is so easy....
- Include any herbs/alternative remedies you take I absolutely love drinking passionflower, lavender flower, and lemonbalm together, along with Yarrow Environmental solution flower essence sprayed all over me daily, self heal cream and echinacea! Rescue Remedy by bach is fabulous! Along with daily aromatherapy, such as rose oil,, patchouli, orange oil, amber & frankincense and Myrrh.
- Include any wellness activities (i.e. meditation, yoga, cleanses/fasts, etc.) that you take part in. I have been partaking in hatha yoga for 7 years now, and it is life changing and breathtaking for my body and spirit, I also love Tony Little's Gazelle and relaxing slow walks... I enjoy apple cider vinegar, lemon water, cilantro and carrot juice, along with my fav eco product Gluten free rice protein powder with no hormones and allergens in it and amazing aminos!
- What is your nutrition/diet philosophy? natural, natural natural as possible. I have not had an alcoholic beverage in 15 years, so good for the body. Radishes, key to liver health, love em! I eat a ton of veggies, such as carrots, broccoli, spinach, parsley, and beets and many others to nourish my body. I also take the hottest cayenne and drink it in heated water, 180,000 HU (heated units). I also take supplements that my body needs that I cannot get from the foods I eat, such as my fav Omega 3-6-9. It took me much research and many years to find the correct routine for my body and I still change it from time to time, for cleansing and balance.
- Please be as specific as possible
- Include a sample one day food diary My daily routines are very lengthy and regimented and have to be. I have a finicky body it seems and it needs much to handle all of the processes, so here goes. But it all works for me and my medical doctor approves of everything I do and he monitors me and we test me regularly for imbalances. I have 2 cups spinach and salmon for breakfast with 25mg iron, I take a b vitamin lozenge, liquid potassium, liquid mag malate, liquid d3 of 4,000 iu daily, I take zinc and echinacea, probiotics 4x day, biotin, rice protein powder with all of the amino acids, grapeseed extract, folate 2 x a day, vit E, Ester C, I eat alot of veggies and salads, and chicken and I especially love almond milk, avocados, chickpeas, cayenne, tilapia and lots of carrots, beets, and turnips. I also love dill pickles and olives and dried fruits. I make a really tasty homemade stew that I seem to live on as staple to base my nutrition around. It is a very healing soup and nourishing and filling. I always cook with extra virgin olive oil! I also drink lemonbalm, passionflower and lavender flower daily in a tea! So profoundly relaxing!
- Include your favorite eco-friendly recipes my stew is just basic really, I like to throw in anything I love and make it my own!, it is beets, turnips, some times beef (since I tend toward anemia) tons of garlic stewed tomatoes and roasted tomatoes, greens, turnip greens, collard greens, garlic, onion, pepper, cayenne, chickpeas, black beans and paprika, chicken and beef stock, with celery and whatever else I can find to make it taste really good, be filling and be healthy and nourishing.
- What is your fitness/exercise philosophy? Yoga and a smile. Gentle for anyone. Relaxing and stretching is one of the best things for the body!
- Describe your personal workout routine I started swimming at age 3. My Mother introduced me to jazzercise when I accompanied her to a class at just 10 years old and I loved it, I was then hooked on the fitness revolution. What a blessing to be introduced to a lifelong commitment and desire of exercise at such a young age. I used to be a professional dancer and choreographer, I also used to run and lift weights. I now feel my body sustained itself into shape and it loves yoga! My body aches alot due to my extreme dancing days, so I tend more now to gentle movements like yoga for breath and body mind balancing, and it works!
- What is your #1 secret for staying fit? A combined regimen of good foods, supplements, yoga, relaxation, rest and affirmations along with flower essences.
- What do you do to loose weight/reduce body fat? Because of what I do daily in my regimen and my years of exercise and many hours of dance, I rarely gain weight. I do not drink, smoke or eat candy or drink sodas, so that takes alot of the weight bearing foods away from me. I always was drawn towards vegetables and fruits for nourishment and it definitely works. I also take trace minerals and they contain chromium picolinate and that burns fat very well for me, along with alot of good water and lemons!!!
- Please include any fitness/wellness tips you may have. Stretching and Yoga really work well for alot of people who cannot run due to injury and cannot play tennis or any other sport, yoga is gentle and gratifying when complete due to the body, mind connection.... if done consistently daily or 3x a week, the body really leans out. Tony Little also has some of the best equipment I have seen for burning all over body fat and achieving total fitness and well being!
- What tips/advice do you have for being a Green Diva on a budget? There are many things a person can do to achieve wellness. Even the simplest thing, such as trader joes shopping bags are fabulous for saving trees and the environment, stop smoking, don't drink, use a toothpaste and deodorant right down to the bottom before purchasing another and see how much you save between the previous purchases, thrift store shopping for clothing=recycling clothes and not buying new and saving a ton of money, buy groceries 2-4 weeks apart to save money and gas and auto emissions and see how much you save making food from home, it is also quite gratifying. And another thought, is try a natural perfume oil instead of a department store bought Eau De Parfum spray. Synthetic perfumes have been proven to be extremely bad for the environment and the body due to chemicals emitting into the air and into the body.
- List 5 of your favorite sustainable foods & why. I buy local, so fresh and organic is the best. Celery, cabbage, radishes, garlic and walnuts. Why? these are all natural, with no gases, grown naturally, mostly root veggies and they last a long time, and I have had great health results with these products, for no allergies, vitamin nutrients, natural antibiotics in the garlic and the walnuts contain melatonin and put me to sleep at night. These are all foods grown in the ground from our Mother Earth. The thought of that while I eat them, calms me and assures me I am safe and in a world of toxicity I am also doing something better for the environment and my body and those i love, who may not know what these healthy foods do for our bodies.
- List 5 foods or ingredients you try to avoid & why. Aspartame, MSG, titanium dioxide in supplements and foods, milk due to hormones and severe allergic reactions, and sucralose, which I have read alot of bad things about. These are all toxic foods that can literally alter the hormones in the body and change the metabolic rate of the body not to mention be damaging for all the organs and potentially causing bacterial infection and viruses. If I may add one more item, I do avoid Soy. Soy causes my estrogen to go through the roof and I can tell the change the very next day and it is agonizing. I feel different on it, and unwell and my thyroid is affected and I do not have a thyroid disease it still creates major havoc for me, so in knowing that foods can have chemicals in them and are chemicals at times, I really try to avoid the fillers and anything I cannot pronounce on a package if it is not raw. I have learned to keep it simple.
- List 5 easy ways we can all help to reduce, reuse & recycle in our daily lives. Share a car and sell the expensive one, buy used clothes or trade, keep cars and homes and do not sell them for an upgrade just because- really enjoy what you have and make it as special as the new thing you would like to buy could be- by making small changes instead of a drastic financial one that could affect those around you, make your own food for lunches and buy less at the grocery and make use of what is at home - to create less garbage and to save money for your family!
- What is your favorite non-profit environmental organization? The Nature Conservancy & EnviroLink.org The EnviroLink Network is a non-profit organization which has been providing access to thousands of online environmental resources since 1991
